Baby Bottle Tooth Decay (Prevention)

  • - After feeding:
  • ** Wipe your baby's gums with a clean soft washcloth
  • ** When teeth appear gently use a child's toothbrush and water
  • - Once you know that your child won't swallow toothpaste, use a pea sized amount of toothpaste
  • - Always ask a dentist or physician before the use of a fluoride-containing toothpaste
  • - Brush your child's teeth until they are able to do it on their own

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

  • - Baby teeth are at risk for decay as soon they first appear in the mouth
  • - Sugary substances combine with saliva to form pools inside your child's mouth and mix with bacteria
  • - The mixture of sugar, bacteria and acid attacks the teeth
  • - Try not to place your child to bed with a bottle--use a pacifier instead
  • - If you must send your child to bed with a bottle or sippy cup, fill with water only
